Thomas DeVere Wolsey has 20+ years’ intensive experience in education teaching English, social studies, and other elective classes in public schools, as well as 20+ years in higher education (some overlapping public schools and higher education). Currently, Wolsey teaches in the Graduate School of Education at The American University in Cairo. Additionally, Wolsey serves as an educational consultant both in the United States and internationally and serves on the review boards of several journals, including The Reading Teacher and The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. Wolsey publishes his articles on literacy and technology in journals such as The Journal of Education, and The Journal of Literacy Research and Instruction. Dr. Wolsey has led successful grant applications to improve middle school practices, and he has extensive experience in professional development around the globe from Guatemala, China, Mexico, and Egypt using online and face-to-face formats including the internationally recognized TextProject with Freddy Hiebert. He guided the implementation of innovative professional development online as program director or consultant for several universities worth several million dollars (USD). As co-PI with Sue Lenski, Dr. Wolsey led a team of cross-institution colleagues to study transfer of effective practice from teacher preparation to actual practice, resulting in 11 peer-reviewed and published studies and one book in press on the topic. His recent books include Literacy in the Disciplines: A Teacher’s Guide for Grades 5-12, Literacy Growth for Every Child, Transforming Writing Instruction in the Digital Age: Techniques for Grades 5-12, and Assessment Literacy: An Educator’s Guide to Understanding Assessment.
